All eyes may be on Donald Trump after his inauguration, but even before he moved into politics his distinct hairstyle garnered plenty of attention.
Among supporters and critics alike, Trump’s barnet has sparked intrigue across the globe. From questions over whether it’s a wig to how it’s styled, many people have plenty to say when it comes to the topic. However Trump, who has been inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States today, insists that it’s all-natural.
Addressing his barnet in a 2013 post on X, Trump wrote: “As everybody knows, but the haters & losers refuse to acknowledge, I do not wear a ‘wig.’ My hair may not be perfect but it’s mine.”
And in a recent rally, Trump boasted about his own hair in a bizarre moment when addressing the crowd in Indiana, Pennsylvania. Spotting a doppelganger, he said: “What a nice-looking man. Who is that? Oh, it’s Trump. What a wonderful-looking person.” He continued to joke about his hair, saying, “I’m just checking out the hairstyle as I’m talking. What can you do? There’s nothing I can do about it. You’re stuck with it.” Later he turned his attention to a man in the crowd, and said: “Look at that guy with a rug on over there.”
But it seems his haircare routine involves more than just a brush. Here, the Mirror takes a look at Trump’s beauty routine from his famous tan to surgery…
Detailing the lengths he goes to in order to perfect his signature look, Trump once told Rolling Stone he first washes with Head and Shoulders before letting his tresses dry naturally for an hour. “I then comb my hair,” explained the ex-president to the magazine.
“Do I comb it forward? No, I don’t comb it forward… I mean, I get a lot of credit for comb-overs. But it’s not really a combover. It’s sort of a little bit forward and back.” And in a conversation with the FBI, Trump’s former bodyguard Walt Nauta revealed his boss was a ‘hoarder’ of hairspray.
Donald Trump’s ever-changing hair colour has left people confused – but there could be an explanation. “The hairdressers get mad at him, but can’t show it, as Trump can’t sit still and he needs at least to sit still for at least 30 minutes for [his hair colour] to take,” a source told PageSix.
They added: “Trump’s hair colour can vary wildly from dark blonde to light – to bright orange – depending on how long his hairdresser can get him to sit still and let the colour do its job. Friends say he’s so impatient that he rarely gives the stylist the 30 to 45 minutes… they need to keep his colour consistent.”
“The shorter time he gives them, the more orange his hair gets, as it takes time to get the darker blonde locks he associates with his younger years.” They revealed Trump “hates” having the hair dye. The source says Donald is always “rushing the hairdresser thus his colour can change every few weeks. And it gets lighter every time he washes it”.
Dr Harold N. Bornstein, Trump’s doctor of 37 years, has the inside track on his health. Dr Bornstein spoke to the New York Times in 2017 and revealed the secret behind those locks.
He explained that the he takes a prostate-related drug, Propecia, to prevent hair loss and male pattern baldness. The good news about Propecia is that it has a 90 per cent success rate. The bad news is that reported side-effects can include mental confusion and sexual dysfunction.
Dr Bornstein – who has pretty impressive mane himself – also revealed the President took antibiotics to control rosacea, a common skin problem, and a statin for elevated blood cholesterol and lipids.
In the explosive book Fire and Fury, author Michael Wolff claims Trump’s daughter Ivanka mocks her dad’s hair – revealing the alleged secret behind the much-ridiculed comb-over. He wrote: “She often described the mechanics behind it to friends: an absolutely clean pate – a contained island after scalp-reduction surgery – surrounded by a furry circle of hair around the sides and front, from which all ends are drawn up to meet in the centre and then swept back and secured by a stiffening spray.
“The colour, she would point out to comical effect, was from a product called Just for Men – the longer it was left on, the darker it got. Impatience resulted in Trump’s orange-blond hair colour.”
Scalp-reduction surgery is an extreme and painful procedure usually reserved for people suffering from alopecia. It involves cutting the bald spot out of the scalp and then stretching the remaining skin to cover the gap. The result is a reduced bald patch, but an unusual hair growth pattern – which could account for the amount of fixing spray the president seems to use to keep his hair in its trademark shape.
Donald Trump‘s former hairdresser Amy Lasch lifted the lid on his unusually ‘solid’ hairstyle. She described his blond dye job as a “calamity” and revealed he used so much lacquer to achieve his trademark style his hair was “solid and matted”.
She told how he shunned professional stylists and even got his own family to cut his locks. Amy continued: “When I looked at the back of his hair I could tell it was not a hairdresser cutting it. It was scary. It was just cut in a straight line.
“The colour was so inconsistent. It was not done correctly. They just coloured the top and did not colour what was underneath properly. It was someone in his inner-circle who was cutting and colouring his hair. His wife or maybe his daughter.”
Amy, who worked with Trump on early seasons of The Apprentice USA, added: “He used a spray with a stickiness to hold it in place. It was not up to me to change what he looks like – I couldn’t do that in a few minutes on a set.
“I would take my comb and point out what I would like to fix and he would normally fix it himself. I did comb the back and did the sides a bit. But everything was solid. It was matted to stay put. I tapped it with my comb and it would bounce back.”
And Amy, who worked with Trump on early seasons of the The Apprentice USA, dismissed rumours the businessman wore a toupee or had a hair transplant. She said: “He has really long hair and he combs it back straight. He does it himself. It is real and it is his hair – he doesn’t have plugs.”
A video of Trump boarding Air Force One on a windy day finally revealed just how bald he really is. Journalist Ashley Feinberg tweeted the bizarre clip of him walking up the stairs to the plane.
It’s halfway up, when the wind is at its strongest, that the back of his hair seems to peel apart and a peach-coloured flap flies to the front of his head. “At first I didnt think this could possibly be real but…. I think it is?” Feinberg tweeted with a link to a video titled: ‘The Real Donald Trump. Beware. You can’t unsee it.’ “Imagine what those locks look like soaking wet,” she added.
