The price of Melania Trump’s inauguration outfit is sure to make some eyes water.
The former model was by her husband Donald Trump’s side as he was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. Melania, 54, wore a custom double-breasted navy coat by Adam Lippes. She paired it with a matching boater hat by Eric Javits. Both items were expertly made by American designers for the occasion.
Eric Javits hats are known for their costly price tag, with experts saying the thing that sets Eric Javits hats apart from other brands is their attention to detail and craftsmanship. A similar boater hat from the designer was listed for sale at over £300.
Lippes, while not a household name, has been a go-to designer for the new First Lady, according to Vogue. He was also the creative genius behind Princess Eugenie’s Trooping the Colour ensemble from the summer of 2017.
The designer told Vogue: “Mrs. Trump’s outfit was created by some of America’s finest craftsmen and I take great pride in showing such work to the world.”
A similar double breasted coat on the official Adam Lippes website was for sale at over £3,000, with Melania’s custom design expected to be worth a lot more.
Melania completed the look with black leather gloves and dark suede pumps as she coordinated with her husband, 78. Melania, a Slovene-American model and jewellery and watch designer, is Trump’s third wife.
Online, fans were split by the outfit look. One user on Twitter/X said: “Makes her look hard. But maybe that’s what she wants to look like today, all business. Don’t mess with me kind of thing.” Another, however, compared her look to Michael Jackson’s famous look – and they weren’t alone in their opinion. There was also positive comments too, with one user saying: “Melania looks so first Lady. Love it!” And another commented: “She looks stunning.”
Following Trump’s first inauguration in 2017, Melania had said of her outfit choice on the day: “It can be a daunting task, to choose an outfit that will be mesmerised and become part of our nation’s story and forever history.”
During her first time as First Lady, Melania kept a relatively low profile amid rumours of a ‘toxic‘ marriage. It remains to be seen how she will act this time around.
Crowds had gathered in Washington DC on Monday, January 20, 2025 despite freezing -6C temperatures – but many of them will not catch a glimpse of the 78-year-old as he is sworn in away from the cold. Earlier in the day, the incoming president and his wife Melania attended a traditional morning service at St John’s Episcopal Church.
They then headed for morning tea at the White House before the official swearing-in ceremony will usher the controversial ex-President back into the Oval Office, with millions of people watching as Trump prepares for an anticipated and feared second four-year term.
Former presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George Bush Jr are among the attendees at the ceremony, which unusually is being held indoors in the Capitol Rotunda Hall due to the extreme weather. Trump’s former election rivals Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris are also in attendance.
