Two Delta passenger planes collided at a major international airport, resulting in one aircraft’s wing being torn off and causing injuries to at least one person. The incident occurred at New York’s LaGuardia Airport around 9:56 pm on Wednesday night when two CRJ-900 regional jets, both operated by Delta’s Endeavor Air subsidiary, collided while taxiing at low speed.
According to Delta’s statement, the wing of a plane preparing for takeoff to Roanoke, Virginia, struck the fuselage of a plane arriving from Charlotte, North Carolina. Shocking footage captured the aftermath, showing one aircraft with a torn wing and the other with a visibly dented nose, while passengers were left stranded as emergency vehicles rushed to the scene.
A passenger described the collision as “absolutely smashed,” recounting the jarring experience of their plane being hit by another Delta flight during taxiing. The impact caused passengers to lurch forward in their seats, creating a chaotic and shocking moment for those onboard.
The flight attendant sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital, as confirmed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Fortunately, there were no reports of passenger injuries, according to the airline. Delta assured that the airport’s operations were not expected to be significantly affected and expressed its commitment to cooperating with authorities to investigate the incident for the safety of all passengers and crew.
“We apologize to our customers for the experience,” Delta’s statement concluded.
