A tragic incident occurred in northeastern Brazil as a passenger bus crashed into a sand embankment and overturned, resulting in the loss of at least 17 lives, as confirmed by authorities. The bus was carrying around 30 passengers when the devastating crash happened on Saturday, October 18. The exact number of individuals injured and transported to nearby medical facilities remains unclear.
The bus, identified as a “tourist bus” by Police Chief Luciano Holanda, was en route to Brumado city when the accident took place in Saloá, Pernambuco state. Reports indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle, veered into the opposite lane, collided with rocks at the roadside, and subsequently hit a sand embankment, causing it to flip over.
Several passengers were ejected from the bus during the rollover due to not wearing seat belts. The bus was returning from Brumado in Bahia state to Santa Cruz do Capibaribe in Pernambuco when the tragic event unfolded. Governor Jernimo Teixeira of Bahia expressed condolences for the lives lost, injuries sustained, and the pain experienced by the affected families, stating that rescue efforts and victim identification are being supported by the administration.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, while it has been confirmed that the driver incurred minor injuries and tested negative for alcohol. According to the Ministry of Transportation, over 10,000 fatalities were recorded in traffic accidents in Brazil in 2024.
