The Davis Cup final’s second singles match was interrupted when a spectator fell ill, causing a pause in the game between Italy’s Flavio Cobolli and Jaume Munar. Munar had won the first set decisively and was leading in the second set before the interruption occurred. The match was halted as medical assistance was called to attend to the unwell spectator, leading both players to temporarily leave the court.
Commentator Arvind Parmar commended Cobolli for his swift response to the situation, highlighting the crowd’s quick reaction and the calm manner in which the incident was handled by officials. During the break, umpire Marijana Veljovic conversed with the players, and Italian captain Filippo Volandri offered advice to Cobolli.
As the spectator was being escorted out of the stands, Parmar noted the potential delay in play as the individual was attended to. The delay lasted approximately ten minutes, after which Cobolli managed to break Munar’s serve and even the second set score.
Italy had a 1-0 lead coming into the second singles match after Matteo Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreno Busta. A victory for Cobolli could secure Italy’s third consecutive tournament win, a feat not achieved since 1972 by the USA. However, if Munar wins, the match will head to a deciding doubles round.
Both teams were missing key players, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who withdrew before the final commenced. The match continued with heightened anticipation and strategic gameplay as the teams vied for victory in the prestigious tournament.
