“Caledonian Sleeper Introduces New Birmingham Route”

Must read

A renowned overnight train service has unveiled a fresh route, expanding the opportunity for more individuals to partake in the journey to Scotland.

The Caledonian Sleeper has introduced a new route, marking the most significant timetable alteration in three decades by connecting Scotland with Birmingham. The train services from Aberdeen, Inverness, and Fort William to London will now include a stop in Birmingham, with no impact on travel duration or departure schedules.

In 2023, the Scottish government assumed control of the Caledonian Sleeper following the premature termination of its contract with the previous operator, Serco. This change coincided with the government’s aim to boost service utilization.

Graham Kelly, the interim managing director of Caledonian Sleeper, stated that research indicated a demand for adding Birmingham to the route. The addition is anticipated to bolster tourism in northern Scotland and the West Midlands.

The new service will commence from Birmingham International on January 15, 2026, operating six days a week, excluding Saturday night departures. Notably, the Lowland service to Glasgow and Edinburgh remains unaffected by this development.

Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, expressed enthusiasm, highlighting the accessibility of the service for travelers to explore the scenic beauty of northern Scotland and vice versa, benefiting tourism and hospitality businesses on both ends.

Furthermore, the West Coast Main Line will undergo modifications to replace a rail bridge near Penrith, causing Avanti West Coast to reroute its Class 805 Evero fleet onto the Settle to Carlisle line during this period. This diversion will facilitate uninterrupted travel when the West Coast Main Line is closed between Preston and Carlisle for two weeks in the upcoming year.

To ensure seamless travel across the North West and into Scotland, Avanti West Coast plans to operate a shuttle service every two hours between Preston and Carlisle via the Settle to Carlisle route.
