A 72-year-old British woman has sadly passed away following a head-on collision at a dangerous spot in Spain.
The incident occurred on the N-332 near the Santa Pola area, close to a junction leading to the Santa Pola lighthouse, at approximately 2 pm on Tuesday. According to the Guardia Civil, the British woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was driving towards Alicante when her vehicle crossed into the opposite lane and collided with a motorhome.
Local sources indicate that the woman experienced a cardiac arrest despite being conscious immediately after the accident. Despite resuscitation attempts, she could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The motorhome driver, a 54-year-old man from Belgium, sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital, while his wife, who was also in the vehicle, escaped unharmed.
The crash caused significant traffic congestion on the N-332, persisting from the time of the incident until around 5:30 pm, when the damaged motorhome was cleared by a recovery vehicle. Forensic investigators spent several hours at the crash site collecting evidence for analysis.
This particular location has a history of numerous accidents. The stretch of the N-332 passing through Santa Pola municipality has one of the highest accident rates in the area, often attributed to risky overtaking maneuvers due to poor visibility.
In a separate incident last month, tragedy struck as a three-week-old infant lost her life and her mother sustained severe injuries in a harrowing car crash at a popular tourist destination in Spain.
Reportedly, the mother and baby were struck by a runaway vehicle as it descended a hill in Calpe, Costa Blanca, in the presence of the woman’s husband and their four-year-old son. The baby was rushed to La Fe Hospital in Valencia on September 15 but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. The mother, taken to Denia Hospital, had to undergo an amputation and suffered from a blood clot.
Local authorities are investigating the tragic incident, which is believed to have been caused by a malfunctioning handbrake in the vehicle that hit the mother and child. The baby was in a stroller pushed by her mother at the time of the accident, and it is not believed that the vehicle involved belonged to the family.
