Birthdays mean a lot to some people – and you want your nearest and dearest surrounding you on your big day, no matter what age you’re about to turn.
So one woman was left mortified when her boyfriend sat her down to tell her he’d be away for her birthday because he’d made other plans with his pals. His excuse was that it is the only day that most people could do.
She was “annoyed and upset” at the fact he’d be missing her plans – but admitted that he had “apologised,” so some people in the comments told her to stop being “sensitive“.
Taking to Mumsnet, she explained: “Yesterday, my partner informed me that the stag do for his friend is set for the weekend of my birthday.
“He apologised and said that’s the weekend that most people could do and it’s not up to him. But he is the best man; if he had told his friend he couldn’t do that weekend, then I’m sure he’d have changed it!”
“He can have his stag do any time; I can’t change the date of my birthday,” she seethed and then asked people whether she was being unreasonable for seeing it in this way.
In the comments, people urged her to just “celebrate twice,” saying it was “unfortunate,” but in the grand scheme of things, “not a big deal”.
Someone wrote: “As long as your boyfriend does something nice to celebrate with you, it doesn’t really matter if it’s the weekend before or after. A best friend’s stag is a one-off; you will have plenty of birthdays to celebrate.”
Another said that they would “judge” a friend if they said they were not able to make an event because of their partner’s birthday, penning: “It would be a non-issue here. I’m an adult and can celebrate another day. Sorry, but I’d judge if a friend said we can’t have the hen do that weekend because it’s my boyfriend’s birthday.”
One Mumsnetter said that they understand birthdays can mean a lot to some people, but stag and hen parties have to take precedence sometimes, saying: “If the majority are only able to make that weekend, then that’s the weekend it’s going to be. Do something with him the weekend before or after.
“The groom has one stag do. You have a birthday every year. I’m all for celebrating birthdays, but I’m also realistic that, as an adult, life gets in the way, and we sometimes have to shift the plans.”
Others asked whether it was a “big birthday,” and could understand her being peeved if it was, but otherwise, the consensus seemed to be that she should just let him get on with it.
