Boxing Legend Ricky Hatton’s Legacy of Mental Health Advocacy

Must read

Ricky Hatton expressed his satisfaction in aiding others in conquering their inner struggles in a heartfelt final conversation captured shortly before his passing.

The former boxing champion, who tragically passed away at 46 years old, will be laid to rest in Manchester next Friday. Despite his notable career that included a significant bout against Floyd Mayweather, Hatton battled with depression.

However, as a devoted Manchester City supporter, Hatton successfully navigated his personal challenges and emerged as a mental health advocate before his untimely demise. In a poignant interview recorded with Darren Barker prior to his passing, Hatton shared his experience with depression, admitting he initially hesitated to confide in his loved ones to avoid burdening them.

He disclosed, “I tried to handle it on my own by putting on a facade of being the life of the party at the gym or pub, trying to compensate for my inner turmoil.” Eventually, Hatton acknowledged the necessity of seeking professional help, emphasizing the importance of opening up to someone outside his immediate circle.

Reflecting on the impact of his journey, Hatton disclosed that individuals reached out to him, stating they had found inspiration from his story to transform their own lives positively. Grateful for the opportunity to make a difference, Hatton highlighted his current role as a trainer, where he aims to impart his wisdom gained from boxing to his students, noting the joy he feels when they achieve significant milestones.

In his own words, Hatton remarked, “Helping others through sharing my experiences and insights on mental health is immensely fulfilling. Knowing that my words have resonated with others and encouraged them to seek help brings me great satisfaction as it ensures that my struggles have served a purpose in aiding others.”
