British boxing legend Ricky Hatton has passed away at the age of 46, as confirmed by Greater Manchester Police. Hatton, a former world champion, made his mark in the sport with notable victories over Kosta Tszyu, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao. Despite his retirement in 2012, Hatton was preparing for a return to the ring scheduled for December.
Born and raised in Hyde, Manchester, Hatton’s boxing journey began as a means to protect himself from bullies after failed football trials. Throughout his career, he achieved significant milestones including winning the WBU light-welterweight title in 2001 and becoming a unified champion in 2005.
Despite a perfect 43-0 record, Hatton faced defeat against Mayweather in 2007 and suffered a brutal knockout by Pacquiao in 2009. Known for his struggles with weight and mental health, Hatton also battled with cocaine addiction, seeking rehabilitation in 2010.
Tributes poured in from the boxing community following his untimely passing, with heartfelt messages from fellow fighters like Amir Khan, Chris Eubank Sr, and promoter Turki Al-Sheikh. Hatton’s legacy in the sport will be remembered with respect and admiration.
