A heartless babysitter has been sentenced to life in prison for causing the death of a toddler by throwing him against a wall. Kimora Hodges, 24, inflicted severe head injuries on 22-month-old Kyrie Starks by repeatedly striking him, resulting in a fatal seizure. Hodges was found guilty of first-degree child abuse and felony murder after a jury trial in Michigan, US.
Hodges had been caring for Kyrie intermittently for his 18-year-old mother, Taylor Starks, but turned violent during a session in June 2022. Despite emergency medical efforts, Kyrie succumbed to his injuries one week later. Hodges was promptly arrested, and evidence pointed to her inflicting a “blunt trauma injury” to the child’s head.
During questioning, Hodges eventually requested a lawyer after about two hours. Despite this, she made incriminating statements during the interrogation. The admissibility of some of her statements was contested in court, resulting in a portion of her three-hour statement being ruled inadmissible by the Court of Appeals.
Recently, Hodges was handed a mandatory life sentence for murder and an additional 15 to 40 years for first-degree child abuse. In court, Taylor Starks expressed forgiveness towards Hodges but also emphasized the lack of accountability and love demonstrated by the babysitter. Starks hoped to find peace and forgiveness despite the tragic incident.
