The horse racing community is in mourning following the tragic passing of apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes at the young age of 19.
A joint statement issued by the Injured Jockeys’ Fund and Professional Jockeys Association expressed deep sorrow over the death of Tommie Jakes, a licensed apprentice jockey, who passed away at his home near Newmarket.
Tommie, a beloved son and brother, was a valued member of George Boughey’s racing team. His family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
Despite his young age, Jakes had already made a mark in the racing world with 59 victories out of 519 appearances since 2023. His first win as an apprentice was aboard Suzi’s Connoisseur trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam at Lingfield.
Coming from a racing family background, Jakes followed his father’s footsteps into the sport and showed early promise by winning races, including a notable victory on Fouroneohfever at Catterick.
The British Horseracing Authority’s acting chief executive, Brant Dunshea, expressed devastation over the loss of Tommie, highlighting his talent and horsemanship that earned him praise from trainers.
Tommie Jakes had formed successful partnerships with trainers like Linda Perratt and Alice Haynes during his career. The racing community will pay tribute to him at Chelmsford and Southwell races.
The George Boughey team, where Tommie was an integral member, shared their grief on social media, remembering him as a talented, kind, and hard-working individual.
Support for those affected by this loss is available through various helplines including the jockey’s helpline, Racing Welfare, and Samaritans.
