A mother of three tragically passed away after using her phone in the bathtub while it was connected to a power source. Joe O’Gorman is advocating for clearer risk warnings on electronic devices following the death of his wife, Ann-Marie O’Gorman, 46, who used the plugged-in phone in the water at their residence in Santry, Dublin.
During an inquest at Dublin District Coroner’s Court, Joe expressed concerns about the false sense of security created by phone companies promoting their devices as waterproof. He discovered his wife unresponsive in their bathroom on October 30, 2024, and despite immediate medical attention, she could not be revived.
Joe revealed that he found his wife with her iPhone and a cable in the bath, leading to the tragic incident. He emphasized the lack of warnings about the risks associated with charging electronic devices near water. This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by using mobile phones in bathrooms.
Paramedics were summoned to the scene promptly, but despite efforts to resuscitate her, Ann-Marie did not respond. The state pathologist confirmed the cause of death as electrocution by the charging cable and phone. The forensic engineer highlighted the grave consequences of even low-voltage electric currents from mobile phone chargers.
The tragic event underscores the importance of safety precautions and the need for clear warnings about the hazards of using electronic devices near water. The coroner acknowledged the risks associated with using phones in baths and extended condolences to the family for the heartbreaking loss.
