Airport authorities were surprised to find an abandoned aircraft leaning nose-down in the grass beside a runway earlier this week. The pilot of the damaged 1972 Cessna Skyhawk was missing, and investigations revealed that the plane had veered off the runway after a rough landing on Tuesday.
The unoccupied Cessna N20392 was discovered around 5 am at Naples Municipal Airport in Florida during a period when the airport’s traffic control tower was closed from 10 pm to 6 am. Security personnel observed two individuals leaving the plane shortly after it landed in the grassy field, and they seemed unharmed, raising more questions for the staff to unravel.
Communications director Robin King stated that the airport staff found the aircraft in the field early in the morning and released the two individuals from the airfield overnight. Flight data indicated that the plane had circled over Fort Myers and Naples before landing at Naples Airport around 2:40 am. The runway had to be temporarily closed to deal with the unexpected situation, but normal operations resumed once the disabled plane was cleared by 6:30 am.
In an interview with WINK News, King described the incident as unusual and mysterious. The pilot, identified as 24-year-old Brianna Brown, returned later in the day after the plane had been removed for inspection. Brown has cooperated with the Naples Police Department and airport operations team regarding the incident.
Lt. Bryan McGinn from the Naples Police Department confirmed that the pilot had slid off the runway but had informed the staff about the situation. It was revealed that Brown had rented the plane from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport and flown it to Naples. Police have filed a report, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will investigate the incident to determine the cause.
Brown, who hails from Fort Lauderdale, was unharmed during the event and is assisting with the investigation. The involvement of Brown and the unidentified second person onboard in potential charges remains uncertain at this time.
