American climber Mallory Geis found dead in Broad Peak avalanche

Must read

Search teams have located the remains of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was part of a 10-member international mountaineering team that tragically perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago. The discovery was made by local volunteers, as confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s inaugural endeavor to scale an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.

Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, the 39-year-old Geis had shared on social media earlier this year her decision to shut down her Pilates studio and embark on a journey filled with uncertainty. Her family described her as a radiant presence who was deeply cherished by her loved ones.

The search operation, initiated on July 31 following the avalanche that struck the team led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja on Broad Peak, has now come to a close. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, is a former British Army soldier of Nepali origin, who gained fame for conquering the world’s 14 highest peaks in a record-breaking 189 days in 2019, a feat showcased in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.”

Tragic incidents like this are not uncommon during climbing expeditions in the northern regions of Pakistan, where hazards such as avalanches, falling ice and rocks, high altitudes, and rapidly changing weather conditions pose significant risks to climbers.
