Fort St. John’s mayor is advocating for increased provincial police assistance to address a rise in gun-related incidents near schools in northeastern B.C. This plea follows what authorities suspect to be a third targeted shooting at a residence in the city. Specific details remain scarce, and the perpetrators have not yet been identified. Mayor Lilia Hansen is urging the deployment of B.C.’s gang task force to curb the violence in the area.
Expressing deep concern, Hansen emphasized the urgency of halting the escalating violence, stating, “One shooting is tragic, two is alarming, and three signifies a critical need to intervene.” She stressed the necessity for a more robust police presence to maintain law and order in the community.
Law enforcement officials are actively investigating the series of shootings that commenced on July 22, with at least one individual sustaining injuries in the initial incident and subsequently facing charges. While the recent shooting on Friday has not been confirmed to have caused injuries by the police or emergency services, local residents reported witnessing at least one person being transported to the hospital via ambulance, with suspicions of additional casualties.
Sergeant Jaime Moffat assured the public that the RCMP is prioritizing the apprehension of suspects involved in the shootings, with a focus on preventing further acts of violence. Moffat acknowledged the public’s apprehension regarding these incidents and confirmed the allocation of significant resources towards identifying and arresting those responsible.
Concerns are mounting among residents as the new school year approaches, particularly due to the proximity of the shootings to elementary and middle schools in the area. Thomas Whitton, a father residing near the targeted residence, expressed shock and unease over the recent surge in violence. He highlighted the importance of providing law enforcement and judicial authorities with the necessary resources to apprehend and detain the perpetrators.
Worried about the potential risks to innocent bystanders, Helen Gilbert, chair of the local School District 60 board, emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures as students return to school. She underscored the gravity of the situation and the impact it could have on the community, urging vigilance and proactive measures to ensure the safety of all residents.
The community remains on edge as authorities intensify efforts to address the escalating violence and bring those responsible to justice.
