“Russia’s Overnight Aerial Assault Kills 16 in Kyiv”

Must read

In a nighttime aerial assault that spanned hours, Russia launched a heavy bombardment on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and its nearby areas, unleashing a barrage of missiles and drones that resulted in the deaths of at least 16 individuals, as confirmed by officials on Thursday.

Over the recent months, Moscow’s military has escalated its ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv, taking advantage of Ukraine’s limited supply of U.S.-manufactured Patriot air defense interceptors, which are the only defense systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles in its arsenal.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urgently appealed for more Patriot interceptors from other nations. However, global reserves are depleted due to ongoing conflicts, such as the Iran war, and Ukraine’s prolonged battle against Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The overnight assault by Russia also involved the deployment of cruise missiles and high-speed jet-powered drones, putting additional pressure on Ukrainian air defenses, as reported by the Ukrainian air force.

Explosions reverberated through the city during the dark hours, with Kyiv being the main target. However, strikes were registered at 28 locations across the nation, with approximately 40 individuals sustaining injuries, as mentioned by Zelenskyy, while air raid alerts persisted until daybreak.

Describing it as a significant attack, Zelenskyy stated on social media that Russia meticulously planned the assault for an extended period, incorporating various types of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones to inflict maximum damage on civilian infrastructure.

Allied Response and Neighboring Reactions

The Russian Defence Ministry claimed that the strike targeted a Kyiv industrial site responsible for producing components for Ukraine’s Flamingo cruise missiles. Additionally, sites involved in drone production and storage, an ammunition depot, and a logistics center were also hit in the assault.

As the Russian offensive on Kyiv unfolded, the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command activated military aviation operations, ground-based air defense systems, and radar reconnaissance.

Polish and other NATO military aircraft were deployed for airspace monitoring, as per reports from the Polish news agency PAP.

Romania’s Defence Ministry reported an incident where an unidentified drone crashed and caught fire in an uninhabited area near the Ukrainian border.
