A peculiar natural wonder, the narwhal tusk, can extend up to three meters in length. This upper tooth protrudes through the whale’s lip on the left side and is distinct for its perfectly straight growth sans any curvature. International researchers have recently unraveled the mystery behind its straightness, attributing it to a unique pattern of opposing spirals.
The revelation, detailed in a recent publication in Nature Communications, sheds light on the two opposing spirals, one clockwise and the other counter-clockwise, that facilitate the tusk’s straight development. The investigation was sparked when a colleague studying molecular chirality approached Henrik Birkedal of Aarhus University after noticing the consistent leftward spirals in narwhal tusks during a Greenland expedition.
Collaborating with biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden, Birkedal’s team delved into the molecular makeup of narwhal tusks and their spirals. Utilizing advanced imaging akin to CT scans, they uncovered a dual spiral structure—a left-handed spiral in the outer cementum layer and a right-handed spiral in the inner dentine layer.
This discovery not only demystifies the straightness of the narwhal’s tusk but also holds promise in illuminating the structural principles of human bones and similar biological instances, as per Birkedal. Martin Nweeia, a narwhal biologist from Harvard University, praised this thorough examination of what he deems “the most extraordinary tooth on the planet.”
While the researchers initially speculated on the tusk’s function, Nweeia’s independent research has emphasized its role primarily as a sensory organ rather than for defense or feeding purposes. Encouraging further exploration into narwhals, Nweeia highlighted the importance of off-season studies and partnerships with Indigenous communities to incorporate traditional knowledge and enhance scientific understanding.
Looking forward, Nweeia and Birkedal advocate for interdisciplinary collaboration, underscoring the significance of merging diverse fields to unlock new insights, exemplified by their recent groundbreaking investigation into the narwhal tusk’s enigmatic straightness.
