Ukrainian authorities investigating corruption allegations within President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration faced scrutiny on Wednesday. This development came after the country’s former defense minister called for national elections amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. The investigation targets a suspected criminal group involving current and former lawmakers, as well as high-ranking officials from the president’s office. More details on the operation are expected to be disclosed later.
President Zelenskyy took action by dismissing Iryna Mudra from her role as deputy head of the president’s office. This investigation poses a new challenge to Zelenskyy’s leadership following previous political setbacks, including the resignation of his chief of staff Andriy Yermak amid corruption allegations.
The recent appointment of Yevhenii Khmara as the new defense minister was approved by Ukraine’s parliament. Zelenskyy nominated Khmara to replace Mykhailo Fedorov, who was ousted in July. Fedorov, in a video address, called for elections in Ukraine, challenging Zelenskyy’s stance on holding elections during martial law due to the ongoing conflict.
Despite recent military successes, including drone attacks on Russian oil facilities and disrupting Russian advances, Ukraine continues to face challenges in peace negotiations and defense capabilities. Zelenskyy’s leadership is also under scrutiny due to ongoing political turmoil and public discontent over key decisions made during the war.
