A research laboratory at Acadia University in Nova Scotia has been awarded $1.2 million by the provincial government to further their studies on tick-borne diseases.
Nicoletta Faraone, the head of the Canadian Tick Research and Innovation Centre, emphasized the crucial role of this funding in establishing and expanding the lab’s operations.
The allocated funds will primarily support the lab’s surveillance program, which focuses on identifying the types of ticks present in the region, the pathogens they carry, and their response to repellents and attractants.
Tick bites can transmit various illnesses to humans, including Lyme disease and anaplasmosis.
Faraone highlighted the lab’s advanced equipment, which will enhance the efficiency of pathogen testing procedures. The ultimate goal is to enhance knowledge about ticks and improve strategies for reducing the risk of tick bites.
The funding originates from Research Nova Scotia’s Focused Research Initiative, supported by the Department of Advanced Education.

Recent data from the Public Health Agency of Canada revealed over 5,800 reported cases of Lyme disease nationwide in 2024, with 2,350 cases reported in Nova Scotia alone, constituting 40% of the national total.
Anaplasmosis and other tick-borne diseases are also witnessing an upward trend, underscoring the urgency for continued research and preventive measures.
After Nova Scotia designated anaplasmosis as a notifiable disease in 2023, reported cases surged from 317 to 681 the following year.
Support for Tick Breeding
Additionally, the federal government is contributing $455,000 to the project through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, as stated by Acadia University.
