The U.S. trade representative has emphasized that any form of retaliation from Canada will not be accepted if President Donald Trump proceeds with imposing new tariffs. This decision, according to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, aims to safeguard domestic supply chains rather than targeting Canada specifically.
Recent trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified following Trump’s threat to impose a substantial 50% tariff on numerous Canadian products effective August 19, in addition to existing sector-specific tariffs. Greer described the ongoing talks with Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc as positive and characterized them as “constructive.”
Greer highlighted that the U.S. is adopting a global approach rather than singling out Canada. He mentioned that while Canada seems inclined towards a more conciliatory stance, the U.S. will prioritize protecting its interests. Greer confirmed that if any country retaliates against the U.S., appropriate actions will be taken in response.
Ahead of the impending August 19 deadline, Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney will be presented with various options. The discussions aim to address the upcoming 50% tariff and the existing tariffs on sectors like automotive and steel industries. While both sides have exchanged proposals, significant gaps remain in terms of tariff reductions that Canada seeks.
Despite efforts to find common ground, some issues persist in trade relations between the U.S. and Canada. Greer highlighted concerns regarding Canadian alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs, likening them to actions taken by China. In contrast, former Canadian ambassador Frank McKenna disputed these claims, stating that Canada is simply defending itself against unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S.
Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent trade deal and urged the Canadian government to stand firm on key issues such as dairy negotiations.
