“Canadians Petition for U.S. Ambassador’s Expulsion”

Must read

Tens of thousands of Canadians have signed a petition urging the expulsion of Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. Ambassador to Canada, citing actions detrimental to Canada-U.S. relations. The online petition, set for presentation in the House of Commons, demands the declaration of persona non grata for Hoekstra and his removal from his diplomatic post.

The petition, initiated by a Calgary resident, highlights Hoekstra’s alleged interference in Canadian political matters and his controversial statements that have strained diplomatic ties between the two countries. It also calls for a parliamentary committee to investigate U.S. diplomatic interventions in Canadian affairs.

With nearly 60,000 signatures, the petition has gained significant traction, prompting Green Party Leader Elizabeth May to present it in Parliament. Hoekstra’s comments suggesting the annexation of Canada by the United States have sparked outrage among Canadians, further fueling the call for his expulsion.

Hoekstra, who has faced criticism for his pro-Trump rhetoric, expressed disappointment over anti-American sentiments in Canada and defended the Trump administration’s policies. Despite facing backlash for his remarks, Hoekstra reiterated his role in representing the President’s views.

The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa refrained from commenting on the petition but acknowledged its existence. Notably, a persona non grata declaration, as per the UN’s Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, could lead to the removal of Hoekstra from Canada.

Recent expulsions of diplomats from China and India indicate Canada’s stance against foreign interference. In the past, Chinese diplomat Zhao Wei was expelled for targeting a Canadian MP, while Indian officials were removed following allegations of government involvement in criminal activities targeting Canadian citizens.

The ongoing efforts under Prime Minister Carney’s leadership aim to strengthen Canada’s relations with China and India while addressing diplomatic challenges.
