“UK Issues Extreme Travel Advisory for Europe Heatwave”

The UK Government has issued an ‘extreme’ travel advisory for British travelers heading to France, Spain, and Portugal due to a heatwave enveloping western Europe.

Temperatures nearing 40C are expected by Wednesday, surpassing the record set in Hampshire in 1976, as red heat alerts have been issued in various European countries.

France has issued the harshest weather warnings for more than half of its regions. Tragically, two young children were found deceased in a car in the south of France, possibly due to the extreme weather conditions.

The UK Foreign Office’s ‘extreme weather’ section provides guidance for travelers to France, Spain, and Portugal on preparing for and dealing with extreme weather conditions.

The meteorological offices in Spain and Portugal have also issued warnings about extreme weather conditions during the summer months, urging people to stay informed and take necessary precautions.

In the UK, record-breaking high temperatures are anticipated in the upcoming days, with forecasts indicating temperatures around 39C, especially in London and the South East.

Overnight temperatures above 20C in England have led to tropical night classifications by the Met Office, followed by thunderstorms and lightning strikes across the country.

Transport disruptions in London have been reported, with flooding affecting the Elizabeth Line and severe delays on the Mildmay Line due to the extreme weather conditions.

National rail services are also expected to face challenges such as sagging wires, buckled rails, and fires, prompting warnings for passengers to avoid non-essential travel and be prepared with water if they must travel.

Rail operators like Avanti West Coast and Chiltern Railways have announced reduced services or cancellations to ensure safety amid the extreme weather conditions, with the RAC noting an increase in breakdown calls.

The scorching temperatures are also impacting schools, leading to closures or early dismissals to protect students from the heat, with adjustments in uniform policies and cancellation of after-school activities.
