British authorities conducted a bold operation in the English Channel on Sunday, seizing a sanctioned Russian shadow fleet oil tanker, marking the first such action, as confirmed by the Prime Minister.
Keir Starmer praised the six-hour military maneuver as a significant strike against Russia and a clear message to those supporting Putin’s actions in Ukraine that they will be held accountable.
The operation, led by UK forces, involved Royal Marine Commandos and specialized officers from the National Crime Agency boarding the vessel Smyrtos.
Dramatic footage released by the Ministry of Defence showcased soldiers descending from a Chinook helicopter onto the 250m-long oil tanker under the cover of darkness around 3 am. The vessel was boarded without incident by NCA officers.
Additional video footage depicted Royal Marines armed with KS-1 rifles entering the ship’s cabins, which were found empty as the Russian crew onboard was unarmed. The operation concluded peacefully with no injuries reported.
The detained tanker, Smyrtos, will be temporarily anchored off the South Coast of England for monitoring of any environmental or safety risks, with support from aircraft such as Chinooks, Merlin Mk4, Wildcat, an RAF P-8 aircraft, and naval vessels HMS Sutherland and HMS Ledbury.
Keir Starmer commended all involved in the operation, recognizing the continuous dedication of armed forces and law enforcement personnel in safeguarding the nation.
In line with international law, the Prime Minister had previously authorized British forces to intercept shadow fleet vessels, with Smyrtos being part of the fleet responsible for transporting a significant portion of Russia’s sanctioned oil used to fund military activities in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude towards the UK for the operation, emphasizing the impact of disrupting Russia’s financial support for the war.
Cabinet minister Lucy Nandy commended the initiative to disrupt the unlawful war funding, highlighting the proactive stance taken by the UK in dealing with the Russian threat.
Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis praised the skill and bravery displayed during the operation, acknowledging the blow dealt to Putin’s aggressive actions.
The Ministry of Defence highlighted the UK’s leadership in combating the shadow fleet, with over 500 vessels already sanctioned, leading to a significant decline in Russia’s oil and gas revenues in 2025.
The operation signifies a strong stance against illicit activities supporting conflict, demonstrating the UK’s commitment to international security and stability.
