Hotel guests are being cautioned to remain vigilant against deceptive scam messages following a security breach at a well-known hotel chain. Personal information of individuals with bookings at one of the chain’s properties was exposed over a six-month period.
BWH Hotels, the parent company of WorldHotels, Best Western Hotels & Resorts, and Sure Hotels, informed customers about the breach via email. The compromised data included guests’ names, email addresses, phone numbers, home addresses, and reservation specifics, but not payment or financial details. The unauthorized access occurred between October 14, 2025, and April 22 of the following year.
The company assured that immediate measures were taken to halt unauthorized access and enhance security protocols to prevent future breaches. Customers were advised to be cautious of suspicious communications, such as unexpected emails, texts, WhatsApp messages, or calls related to their hotel stays.
Privacy experts have raised concerns about the potential misuse of the stolen information for future scams. Scammers could exploit hotel booking data to craft more convincing fraudulent schemes by referencing real stays, dates, locations, or reservation numbers.
According to Peter Nguyen, a privacy expert at Protect My Data, travelers should not underestimate the impact of such breaches solely because payment details were not compromised. He emphasized that a scammer armed with a guest’s name, phone number, hotel details, and booking reference could create highly convincing fake messages.
Nguyen advised guests to be cautious of any unsolicited messages regarding booking issues, payments, refunds, or reservations. He warned against engaging with requests for payment information, codes, logins, or verifications through suspicious messages, urging recipients to directly contact the hotel or booking platform instead.
The breach serves as a reminder of the risks associated with compromised contact and booking information, which can be exploited for phishing attempts. Experts highlight that even seemingly innocuous details like special requests can be leveraged by scammers to personalize their fraudulent tactics.
As travelers gear up for summer trips, securing personal information and staying alert to potential scams is crucial. Nguyen stressed the importance of verifying the authenticity of hotel-related messages independently and refraining from clicking on links in suspicious communications.
