Several theme parks are set to close down following lackluster performance seasons, with a popular park in the UK being affected. In Somerset, the Brean Theme Park faced liquidation earlier this year, joining a list of other parks shutting their doors.
Glenwood Caverns in Colorado, US, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February due to financial and reputational challenges in recent years. Theme park giant Six Flags announced the closure of six “underperforming” locations within its portfolio of amusement and water parks in 2026, following a significant loss of over $1.2 billion in 2025.
Another long-standing amusement park is bidding farewell in 2026. The Wild Waves Theme and Water Park in Washington State commenced its final season at the end of May, marking the end of nearly 50 years in operation due to escalating operational expenses.
Premier Parks, the operator of Wild Waves, expressed gratitude to guests, team members, and the Federal Way community for their support over the years. Rising operational costs post-COVID shutdown resulted in substantial losses, forcing the park to cease operations after the 2026 season concludes on November 1.
During the final season, all 30 rides and water slides will remain operational, and previously purchased season passes or packages will be honored. Special events and promotions will be held to celebrate the park’s legacy and provide a memorable experience for visitors.
Reports indicate that the amusement park will be replaced by a one-million-square-foot warehouse, a plan that has received criticism from local residents who cherished the theme park. Previous considerations for the site included a hotel and a convention center, with co-owner Jeff Stock assuring a respectful transition and promising long-term benefits for the area.
