“Formula One Rule Changes Boost Power Distribution”

Must read

The FIA has recently confirmed a major agreement for rule changes set to impact the 2027 and 2028 Formula One seasons. The key modification involves the shift in power distribution within the engine, transitioning from the current 53/47 split to a new 60/40 ratio in two years.

According to an official statement from the FIA, discussions among the FIA, FOM, Teams, and Power Unit Manufacturers have led to a consensus on a comprehensive set of alterations to the Formula 1 regulations for the upcoming seasons. These changes aim to address concerns related to energy management under the revised Power Unit framework.

The proposed adjustments are designed to tackle issues concerning energy management, fuel energy flow characteristics, and enhance the flat-out nature of Qualifying sessions without compromising the competitive and thrilling racing that the new regulations have brought.

The agreed package will gradually rebalance the contributions of the Internal Combustion Engine and Energy Recovery System throughout the 2027 and 2028 campaigns. It includes specific modifications to the internal combustion engine output, fuel energy flow, energy recovery system deployment, and provides increased flexibility in energy management.

Initially planned for full implementation before the 2027 season, the changes faced setbacks as some power unit manufacturers withdrew their support. As a result, a compromise was reached, leading to a phased introduction of the modifications.

Following this decision, there will be a reduced reliance on the battery, aiming to address issues like derating experienced at the end of long straights. This move signifies a significant development in response to widespread complaints from drivers regarding the current 50/50 electric-to-combustion engine setup.

The latest development signals progress in addressing the challenges faced by drivers in the current season. In the drivers’ championship standings, Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes leads, with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in second place and George Russell, Antonelli’s teammate, in third position as they gear up for the upcoming event in Barcelona.
