“UK considers banning children from social media”

Must read

Keir Starmer is facing a critical decision regarding the potential prohibition of children from accessing social media platforms, with a mother who has experienced loss urging prompt action. As a consultation on enhancing platform safety for youths concluded, Prime Minister Boris Johnson committed to swift action. Growing calls advocate for platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram, and X to be restricted to individuals over 16, following Australia’s lead in implementing a similar policy.

Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting recently joined the chorus of voices supporting a ban, while medical professionals have drawn parallels between excessive screen time, social media use, and the health risks associated with smoking. Advocates for the ban argue that it is the most effective way to protect children from harmful online content.

Ellen Roome, who believes her son tragically died while engaging in an online challenge, emphasized the urgency for action, stating that it is imperative to raise the minimum age limit to 16 to address a crisis that has resulted in numerous tragedies. Acknowledging the stories of affected families, Starmer met with them and reassured them of his commitment to taking necessary action promptly.

In response to the mounting pressure, the Government is considering various measures following the consultation period, including potentially imposing restrictions like time limits for scrolling, ending autoplay features, and implementing curfews for children. The Commons Education Committee has also recommended a ban on social media for minors, emphasizing the need to safeguard children from harmful online influences.

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has expressed concerns about the negative impact of screen time and social media on young people’s health and well-being, likening it to other public health concerns like smoking and seatbelt usage. Despite a recent parliamentary vote against an immediate ban on social media for under-16s, the Government has committed to introducing age or functionality restrictions in the near future.
