Majorca Clubs Cut Hours Amid Tourist Decline

Must read

Clubs in a popular Spanish holiday destination frequented by British tourists are reducing their operating hours due to a decrease in visitors. The head of the hospitality sector in Majorca has cautioned that establishments like bars, restaurants, and clubs on the sunny island will experience lower earnings compared to 2025 as both tourists and locals are spending less.

Despite the influx of holidaymakers on the Balearic Islands, there is a noticeable decline in club attendance, as noted by Miguel Pérez-Marsá, the president of the ABONE nightlife association. Concerns arise from a slow previous year, with expectations of even lower turnout and revenue, according to a statement made to the Majorca Daily Bulletin.

In an effort to attract customers amidst rising flight and accommodation costs for the upcoming summer season, clubs are keeping prices competitive. However, to manage expenses, businesses are cutting back on their opening hours, particularly during weekdays, focusing on weekends, and limiting the peak season from June 20 to August 20.

Issues surrounding nightlife in Majorca have been ongoing since the COVID-19 lockdowns. Recent events include deserted beaches and unoccupied tables, prompting anti-tourism protests in Palma. With tourism contributing 45% of the islands’ income, concerns persist despite an overall increase in visitor numbers to the Balearic Islands, comprising Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza, and Formentera.

Of particular worry is the decline in German tourists, who traditionally form a significant part of Majorca’s holidaymakers. The decrease in German visitors is attributed to anti-tourism sentiments, leading to questions from tourists about the island’s welcoming stance. While some blame the protests, others suggest that the weather, affected by global warming, might be a contributing factor to the changing tourist landscape.
