Virgin Media has shared valuable advice to ensure optimal internet speeds throughout the year. While common practices like placing the router centrally, rebooting it monthly, and avoiding signal disruptions such as fish tanks are known to enhance performance, one crucial factor often overlooked is the impact of weather changes.
As temperatures rise in late spring and summer, routers face increased strain, necessitating placement in cool, well-ventilated areas.
Virgin Media highlighted in a recent blog post how warmer weather can affect broadband speeds, stating, “High temperatures during hot weather can stress broadband equipment, both indoors and outdoors.
“While external equipment is designed to handle heat, internal routers may struggle if exposed to excessive warmth.
“Routers require adequate airflow for optimal functionality. If placed behind furniture, in a cupboard, near a radiator, or in direct sunlight, heat accumulation, especially during a heatwave, can lead to slower speeds, disconnections, or automatic restarts for cooling.”
Therefore, during warm weather, it is essential to position the router in cooler surroundings. While hot weather can affect performance, other weather conditions are less likely to disrupt online activities like streaming.
Virgin Media also emphasized, “Most broadband issues perceived as weather-related actually originate indoors.
“Factors such as thick walls, excessive devices, and poor router placement often have a more significant daily impact on connections than external weather conditions.”
For optimal Wi-Fi performance, it is recommended to position the router centrally, away from direct sunlight and large metal objects, avoiding concealing it behind furniture.
After severe weather, Virgin Media suggests checking the cables to ensure they are secure and undamaged.
Lastly, reducing interference by limiting simultaneous device connections can further enhance internet stability and speed.
