Images showcasing the interior of a luxury motorhome, priced at £124,550 and purchased unlawfully by former SNP leader Peter Murrell, have been unveiled.
The ex-party chief executive made a court appearance at the High Court in Edinburgh, where he admitted to embezzling over £400,000 from party funds. During a 30-minute statement, prosecutor Alan Cameron KC detailed how Murrell misused charge cards, fabricated invoices, and conducted bank transfers to finance extravagant buys using party money sourced mainly from membership fees and donations.
The Crown Office has disclosed pictures of the Niesmann and Bischoff motorhome, acquired in October 2020, which Murrell furnished with high-end Molton Brown toiletries and kitchenware from upscale brands such as Le Creuset and Joseph Joseph. Authorities found the vehicle parked at his mother’s residence in Dunfermline, with the odometer displaying a mere four miles of usage.
During court proceedings, it was mentioned that the purchase invoice described the motorhome as a “van” rather than a motorhome and emphasized that it was never displayed or utilized by any other party member or employee.
Furthermore, it was revealed that a robotic lawnmower worth £3,000 was discovered at Murrell’s residence during a police search, falsely labeled as “legal fees” in the SNP’s financial records. Similarly, a silver wine coaster valued at £3,500 was recorded as “leadership expenses.”
A significant sum of over £42,000 was expended on 383 items from Amazon, which were not related to party activities and were predominantly delivered to his home or the SNP headquarters, as per Mr. Cameron’s statement.
Murrell resorted to fabricating financial records and generating counterfeit invoices in an attempt to conceal his illicit activities while making numerous purchases. The disclosed list of purchases upon his guilty plea included luxury items like two Bremont watches totaling £9,350, two Montblanc Boheme Noir fountain pens priced at £1,407, and a silver wine coaster costing £3,500.
According to court documents, he falsified an invoice for £57,500 to acquire an £81,277 Jaguar I-Pace, which he later sold for £47,378. Additionally, he misappropriated £16,489 of party funds for a £32,989 Volkswagen Golf.
In addition to high-end purchases, Murrell made smaller buys such as a £2.50 Neutrogena hand cream, staples for £4, and Chinese curry sauce paste for £12. He also splurged on a £67 toilet seat.
Murrell was initially apprehended in 2023 as part of Operation Branchform, an inquiry into potential financial mismanagement within the SNP. His resignation as SNP chief executive came shortly before his arrest, following a dispute regarding membership statistics.
The guilty plea has raised questions about Nicola Sturgeon, who refutes any awareness of her ex-husband’s misdeeds. Sturgeon stated that she feels unjustly punished for a crime she
