England’s World Cup preparations were disrupted by a significant earthquake just days before their final warm-up match. The team, led by Thomas Tuchel, had been training in Florida ahead of their tournament opener against Croatia on June 17. However, on Monday night, the area experienced a 6.1 magnitude earthquake originating off the coast of Cuba.
Although the team was over 150 miles away from the epicenter, tremors were still felt in Orlando and other parts of Florida. Videos circulating on social media captured buildings shaking, but fortunately, no injuries or property damage were reported.
The National Weather Service confirmed that there was no threat of a tsunami reaching the United States. Reports indicated that the earthquake had a depth of 10km and a revised magnitude of 6.1.
The tremors were also felt in Miami and Jacksonville, prompting evacuations of several buildings for safety reasons. England’s upcoming match against Costa Rica in Orlando will proceed as scheduled before they move to their base in Missouri for the tournament.
Tuchel emphasized the challenges his team will face, including the intense Florida weather conditions, but expressed confidence in their ability to adapt and persevere throughout the World Cup. In their recent friendly against New Zealand, Tuchel experimented with different lineups but hinted at fielding a more consistent team for future matches.
After a rest day on Sunday, England’s players resumed full training on Monday as they gear up for the upcoming matches. Additionally, England and Nike have unveiled their new kits for the World Cup, offering free delivery with the code ENGFREEDEL.
