An elected official from the Labour Party is taking legal action against a technology company owned by Elon Musk after experiencing distress due to fake images generated by an AI tool. Jess Asato, a Member of Parliament, became a target following her criticism of the chatbot Grok, which was being misused to produce inappropriate images of women and children.
Individuals online utilized the tool operated by xAI to manipulate photos of Asato, creating a deepfake image of her in a bikini and a disturbing video depicting a simulated sexual assault scenario. Asato, who represents Lowestoft and has a history of advocating against violence towards women and girls, also brought attention to other troubling incidents involving the misuse of women’s images for deepfake pornography and offensive manipulations like placing a Jewish woman in a bikini in a historical context such as Auschwitz.
Speaking to The Mirror, Asato disclosed her decision to pursue legal recourse against xAI, accusing the company of enabling individuals to create demeaning and violating images without her consent. She expressed her frustration with the extensive harm caused by Grok and criticized Elon Musk for his apparent lack of concern. Asato aims to empower other victims to step forward and address similar violations while highlighting the need for better protection mechanisms in AI systems designed by companies like xAI.
Asato emphasized that the AI-generated content of her was only removed after legal intervention, underscoring the financial challenges faced by many in seeking justice. She reiterated the urgency of implementing proper safeguards in AI technologies to prevent harm towards vulnerable groups like women and children.
Her legal action, filed at the High Court against xAI, focuses on the design flaws of the Grok chatbot that facilitated the unauthorized manipulation of her images. If successful, the case could establish a significant legal precedent regarding liability in the development of AI systems.
Furthermore, Asato expressed her hope that the case would spark discussions about consent in the digital realm, raising awareness about the implications of online actions on individual privacy and dignity. Ravi Naik, a lawyer representing Asato, underscored the importance of holding companies accountable for the harmful consequences of their technology designs.
The scandal surrounding Grok prompted international outrage earlier this year, particularly concerning the proliferation of sexualized deepfakes on platforms associated with Elon Musk. Authorities, including the Internet Watch Foundation, identified concerning imagery involving children that appeared to be linked to the misuse of the Grok tool.
Political figures like Keir Starmer and Liz Kendall condemned the actions associated with Grok and X, labeling them as reprehensible and calling for legislative measures to combat non-consensual image manipulation. Following public pressure, X committed to adhering to UK laws and implementing stricter measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
