“7.8 Magnitude Quake Hits Philippines, Tsunami Threat Looms”

Videos depicting buildings collapsing and residents shouting in terror during a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the Philippines have circulated on social media today.

A potential tsunami threat looms over the Philippines following a significant earthquake near Mindanao, Philippines, as declared by the US Tsunami Warning System. A seismic event of around 7.8 magnitude jolted Davao City around 7:40 am local time on Monday, June 8, 2026. Locals experienced intense tremors leading to precautionary evacuations from structures.

Tsunami alerts have been issued for several regions including the Philippines, West coast of the United States, Indonesia, Palau, Yap, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea. Social media footage has captured structural collapses.

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has lifted the tsunami watch warning for the nation and its territories. The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC) issued the cancellation at 10:38 am AEST.

The BoM statement indicated, “An undersea earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occurred at 9:37 am AEST on Monday, June 8, 2026 near Mindanao, Philippines. No tsunami threats have been identified for Australia’s mainland, islands, or territories. THE TSUNAMI WATCH FOR AUSTRALIA IS CANCELLED. Updates will be provided only if the situation changes.”

In a video, the Plaza building, housing LOVE Radio Gensan and DZRH News FM, dramatically crumbled following the intense earthquake in Sarangani. Passersby just meters away can be heard screaming as dust clouds envelop the area.
