Must read

Flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in Indonesia’s Sumatra island have resulted in the deaths of at least 10 individuals, with six others still missing.

Response teams are actively engaged in reaching regions impacted by monsoon downpours in various parts of North Sumatra province. The overflow of riverbanks has led to widespread destruction, causing havoc in six regencies across the area.

So far, rescuers have retrieved five bodies and rescued three injured individuals from Sibolga city. Additionally, four fatalities were recorded in the neighboring Central Tapanuli district, and one person lost their life in the South Tapanuli district due to a tree falling during the natural calamity.

According to reports by AP, Eddy Inganta, the police chief of Sibolga, confirmed the establishment of emergency shelters and advised residents in high-risk zones to evacuate promptly.

Inganta mentioned, “The rescue operation has been impeded by adverse weather conditions and mudslides.”

The period from October to March typically witnesses heavy rainfall, leading to frequent flooding and landslides in Indonesia.

Indonesia, known as the world’s largest archipelago nation, is home to millions of residents residing in mountainous regions and fertile floodplains across its 17,000 islands.

The recent flooding occurred on November 25, coinciding with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency’s conclusion of relief operations after ten days in two regions of Java island. The operations were terminated following 38 casualties from landslides caused by relentless rain, as per AP reports.
