Family of Four Dies from Pesticide Poisoning in Istanbul

Must read

A tragic incident unfolded in Istanbul, Turkey, turning a family vacation into a nightmare for a family of four, including two young children, who lost their lives after being exposed to a pesticide meant for eradicating bed bugs in their hotel room.

The distressing event took place on 11th November when the family, originally from Germany, fell ill just two days after arriving in Istanbul for their holiday. The victims were identified as 27-year-old mother Cigdem Bocek, father Servet, 38, and their children Masal, three, and Kadir Muhammet, six. In a desperate plea for help, the father hailed a taxi and urged the driver to rush them to the nearest hospital.

The taxi driver recounted the heartbreaking scene, describing how the father hurried his family into the car, the young girl was repeatedly vomiting, and the mother was already unconscious, slumped against the window. Tragically, they became critically ill in their hotel room and were later pronounced dead.

Initially thought to be a case of food poisoning from local street food, the investigation took a turn when 11 individuals, including hotel staff, were arrested. It is suspected that aluminum phosphide, a substance used in bedbug treatment, seeped into the family’s room through the ventilation system, causing their poisoning.

Aluminum phosphide, a common pesticide, can be lethal if inhaled at high levels. Further inquiries revealed that at least one worker from the pest control company responsible for the hotel’s treatment lacked the necessary certification.

CCTV footage captured the family checking into the hotel in Istanbul on November 9, just two days before falling ill. The mother and children tragically passed away shortly after being hospitalized, while the father lost his life after six days in intensive care.

Following the incident, the hotel was evacuated, and samples were collected for testing. Seven individuals, including street food vendors, were detained for questioning. The Forensic Medicine Institute is examining samples from the food establishments the family visited.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to conduct thorough investigations to determine the cause of the tragic deaths. The family’s grief-stricken grandfather, Mustafa Celik, expressed his anguish and pledged to seek justice for his daughter and her family.
