Keir Starmer is scheduled to hold crucial discussions with global partners during the G20 summit regarding Donald Trump’s proposed resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
While refraining from direct criticism, the Prime Minister acknowledged the necessity to enhance the US president’s 28-point peace initiative. Trump has set a deadline of November 27 for Ukraine to respond to the plan.
Ahead of the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, Mr. Starmer pledged to collaborate with international leaders to achieve a fair and enduring peace. Emphasizing the importance of strengthening the current proposal, he stated, “We will explore ways to bolster President Trump’s peace efforts in the upcoming negotiation phase.”
Criticizing Russia’s actions in Ukraine, Starmer highlighted the need for a ceasefire and condemned the ongoing violence perpetrated by Russian forces. He expressed concerns over Russia’s insincerity towards peace efforts despite their continuous military actions in Ukraine.
Following discussions with US Vice President JD Vance on “achieving lasting peace,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed support for Trump’s peace initiative. The leaked 28-point peace plan includes provisions for an immediate ceasefire and territorial concessions by Ukraine.
The plan stipulates the transfer of Crimea, Luhansk, and Donetsk to Russia, with certain Ukrainian cities to be demilitarized along existing conflict lines. Additionally, the plan mandates a reduction in Ukraine’s military personnel and outlines economic arrangements between Moscow and Washington.
President Putin endorsed the plan as a potential framework for a final peace settlement in Ukraine. However, he accused Ukraine of rejecting the proposal, leading to the development of an updated 28-point plan.
In efforts to find a resolution, Keir Starmer engaged in discussions with France, Germany, and Ukraine on ending the conflict in Ukraine. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to securing a just and enduring peace that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
