A tragic incident unfolded in Portugal as a British woman lost her life due to a severe weather event resembling a tornado that wreaked havoc on a campsite and hotel near Albufeira on the Algarve. The 85-year-old victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, was declared missing initially but was later found deceased amidst the wreckage. The unexpected storm, believed to be linked to Storm Claudia that hit Portugal, also caused injuries to 28 individuals of various nationalities, ranging from six to 86 years old.

Authorities have labeled the calamity as an “extreme wind phenomenon,” with Portugal’s weather agency indicating a high possibility of it being a tornado. The intense winds impacted both a campsite and a hotel complex, resulting in widespread destruction and chaos, with debris scattered by powerful gusts. Among the injured were British, Portuguese, and Spanish tourists, with varying degrees of severity in their conditions.

The adverse weather conditions particularly affected the Hotel Eden, where 19 individuals sustained injuries, including one serious case, and the campsite where the British woman lost her life, leaving two others critically injured. Expressing condolences, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa extended support to the victim’s family affected by the tragic outcome of Storm Claudia.

Albufeira’s mayor, Rui Cristina, expressed solidarity with the affected individuals and emphasized the municipality’s commitment to providing assistance and restoring normalcy swiftly. The authorities are diligently working with municipal resources and civil protection agencies to aid the victims and ensure safety in the aftermath of the devastating weather event.
