Must read

The Vatican has unveiled a list of the Pope’s favorite films, featuring the classic ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ at the top. This list was released in anticipation of Pope Leo’s upcoming meeting with 30 Hollywood stars. ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ is a heartwarming Christmas film from 1946 directed by Frank Capra, starring James Stewart as a man contemplating suicide who is shown the impact he has had on others by his guardian angel.

Among the surprising choices on the list is Robert Redford’s 1980 film “Ordinary People,” which delves into a family’s struggles coping with loss and attempted suicide. This critically acclaimed movie, set in Illinois, won four Oscars, including Best Picture, offering a glimmer of hope in its conclusion.

The lineup continues with the beloved musical “The Sound of Music,” showcasing Julie Andrews in a true-life story set in Austria during the Nazi era. Following this is “Life is Beautiful,” a touching comedy-drama directed by Roberto Benigni about a father and son navigating a Nazi death camp.

The diverse selection of films will serve as a conversation starter during Pope Leo’s gathering with the Hollywood stars at the Vatican. A Vatican spokesperson highlighted the aim to foster dialogue with the film industry and explore how artistic expression can contribute to promoting human values.

Among the notable guests expected at the Vatican are actors Cate Blanchett, Chris Pine, Alison Brie, Dave Franco, and Viggo Mortensen, along with directors Spike Lee, George Miller, and Gus Van Sant.
