A skilled detection canine from the UK has played a crucial role in disrupting smuggling activities in the Channel by aiding in the seizure of 76 illegal boats, marking a significant operation. Named Adele, this sniffer dog is stationed at the Bulgaria-Turkey border, renowned as the world’s second busiest border, where she detects contraband that trafficking networks attempt to smuggle into Europe. Trained by the National Crime Agency, Adele specializes in identifying the rubber material used in people smugglers’ dinghies concealed within trucks.
Collaborating with global partners, the NCA has confiscated a total of 76 vessels this year, with a recent intensified operation conducted in conjunction with the Home Office, HMRC, Foreign Office officials, and the Bulgarian authorities. During a 48-hour period at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, searches of 350 freight and passenger vehicles led to the discovery of several illegal migrants.
Can Gunal, an international liaison officer with the NCA, emphasized Adele’s critical role in combating people smuggling networks utilizing the Bulgarian border for transferring equipment used in perilous Channel crossings. Additionally, Adele has successfully detected various illicit items and criminal proceeds.
Julie Roper, who spearheaded the NCA operation, highlighted the significance of intercepting boats, preventing potential drownings, and denouncing the unseaworthy vessels used by smugglers. Notably, one of the prominent figures exploiting the smuggling route was Hewa Rahimpur, sentenced to 11 years in Belgium for leading a major human trafficking syndicate facilitating illegal crossings over the English Channel.
Rahimpur orchestrated a sophisticated criminal enterprise, operating from the UK and sourcing boats, engines, and life jackets for migrant journeys. Last week, UK law enforcement officers gathered forensic evidence from previously seized boats to enhance intelligence against organized crime groups like Rahimpur’s.
The intensified efforts also targeted various illegal activities, including drug smuggling, illegal tobacco trade, cash trafficking, and counterfeit goods. Recent operations resulted in the confiscation of 20 boats on August 10 and 26 boats on July 26 this year.
Jacque Beer, Regional Head of Investigations, stressed the crucial role of Bulgaria as a pivotal entry point for criminal networks orchestrating treacherous Channel crossings. Collaboration with international partners is essential in combating cross-border smuggling and ensuring enhanced border security through intelligence-led strategies.
Philip Nikolov, representing the Bulgarian Border Customs Police, emphasized the importance of international cooperation in countering transnational crime and securing Europe and the United Kingdom. The collaborative efforts have yielded tangible outcomes, including saved lives, cleaner business environments, and a more humane society, underscoring the effectiveness of joint actions and information exchange among partners.
