One of the National Guard members targeted in an attack in Washington DC has tragically passed away, confirmed by officials. President Trump has announced the death of the female member, identified as Sarah Beckstrom, aged 20, due to her injuries. Andrew Wolfe, the second National Guard member, is currently in critical condition. The announcement of Sarah’s death was made during a Thanksgiving call with US service members on Thursday evening.
President Trump expressed his condolences, acknowledging Sarah Beckstrom as a highly respected and remarkable individual. He described her as a young and magnificent person who was savagely attacked and has now passed away. Sarah’s father, Gary Beckstrom, shared with the New York Times that her injuries were fatal, stating that there was no chance of recovery.
Governor Patrick Morrisey praised Sarah’s courage, resolve, and dedication to serving her state and nation. He emphasized her bravery and sacrifice while mourning the loss of a young woman who gave her all in defense of others. The tragic incident involved a suspected shooter identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, and is being investigated by the FBI as an act of terror.
According to reports, Lakanwal allegedly ambushed the National Guard members near the Farragut West Metro Station in Northwest DC. Law enforcement sources revealed that he shot Sarah before being subdued and taken into custody. The suspect was shot multiple times and taken to the hospital for treatment. Initial reports from Governor Morrisey incorrectly stated that both guards had died, but later corrections clarified their critical condition.
President Trump extended his sympathies to the affected families and criticized President Joe Biden’s immigration policies. The assailant’s actions were condemned by US authorities, with a halt placed on immigration requests related to Afghan nationals pending security reviews. An Afghan advocacy group denounced the attack, cautioning against unfairly targeting or harming Afghan resettlers in America.
