“Man Dies Choking on Roaches in Eating Contest”

Must read

A tragic incident occurred during a competitive eating competition in 2012 when a man from West Palm Beach, Florida, named Edward Archbold, passed away from choking on live cockroaches. The event, known as “Midnight Madness,” took place at the Ben Siegel Reptile Store in Deerfield Beach. Archbold, 32, succumbed to asphyxiation as the roaches’ body parts obstructed his airway, causing him to collapse and vomit shortly after participating in the contest.

Archbold’s girlfriend, Natasha Proffitt, mentioned that he had previously consumed bugs and had intended to gift a female python to a friend. Sarah Bernard, a student of entomology at the University of Florida who attended the competition, shared that it comprised multiple rounds featuring various insects. In the final round, participants consumed three to four-inch roaches, with around 30 contestants taking part, none of whom reported any other health issues.

Shop owner Ben Siegel remembered Archbold as the “life of the party,” expressing deep remorse over the tragic outcome. He noted that Archbold seemed eager to impress and was a friendly individual. Legal representatives for the contestants confirmed that all participants had signed waivers accepting the risks associated with the unconventional contest. The county medical examiner attributed Archbold’s death to “asphyxia due to choking and aspiration of gastric contents.”

Medical examiner Craig T. Mallak explained that the epiglottis, a valve designed to prevent objects from entering the lungs, failed in Archbold’s case. This failure led to difficulties in swallowing and breathing simultaneously, ultimately resulting in the fatal outcome. Colleagues of Archbold, such as Kim Crawford from Busch Canvas & Interiors, paid tribute to his memory, describing him as a kind and intelligent individual whose untimely death was a tragedy.

In response to the incident, Lou Manza, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College, analyzed the motivations behind extreme activities like bug eating. He suggested that individuals engaging in such events often seek to add excitement and meaning to their lives, especially as they grow older and crave experiences beyond the ordinary.
