A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years in prison by Judge Pauline Codd at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for a brutal attack on a woman, which she described as “misogynistic” and “depraved.” The defendant, who was 21 at the time of the assault, admitted to causing serious harm to the victim in a city center flat on March 6, 2024. Despite having 15 previous convictions and being on bail, the man received a 10-year prison term with the final year suspended. Garda Colm Carroll detailed how he and a colleague responded to a disturbance in an apartment, leading to the apprehension of the suspects and discovery of the victim bleeding severely.
Emergency services quickly transported the injured woman to St. James’ Hospital, where she underwent treatment for multiple stab wounds to her genital area. Medical reports presented in court highlighted the extent of her injuries, including deep lacerations and significant blood loss. The victim faced challenges for future childbirth due to the severity of the wounds. The court also heard evidence of the defendant’s involvement, supported by CCTV footage and incriminating voice notes retrieved from his phone.
During the sentencing, the judge emphasized the defendant’s disturbing intent and the impact of the attack on the victim’s physical and emotional well-being. The defense acknowledged the defendant’s mental health issues and expressed remorse on his behalf, noting his efforts to address his condition while in custody. Despite these factors, the judge condemned the vicious nature of the assault, describing it as one of the most depraved acts imaginable.
