A tragic incident involving a dog inside a van resulted in the death of a man outside his residence. James Campbell, a 68-year-old resident of Cantonment in Tampa, Florida, lost his life in 2013 due to an unforeseen accident caused by his excitable pet.
The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that the incident occurred in January when Campbell was assisting his wife in parking their 1995 Chevrolet van in their driveway. While Campbell went to open the driveway gates, leaving the van door ajar, his wife, Iris Fortner, was behind the wheel checking his position.
Seizing the opportunity, the pet dog leaped into the driver’s seat, accidentally pressing the accelerator pedal. In a split second, the van lurched backward, striking Campbell and trapping him underneath. Despite his wife’s desperate efforts to stop the vehicle, Campbell succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
While Campbell’s wife sustained minor injuries and was taken to West Florida Hospital, no charges were filed in connection with the incident. The tragic accident highlighted the dangers posed by a running vehicle, a loose dog, and an engaged gear.
In a peculiar occurrence in the same month in Miami, another dog-related incident unfolded. Homeowners were startled awake by their dog’s frantic barking, only to discover a naked intruder attempting to harm their pet Rottweiler. The intruder was subsequently shot by a homeowner in self-defense and detained until police arrived.
Miami Police Department spokesperson Willie Moreno described the intruder’s irrational behavior, emphasizing the homeowner’s justified actions in protecting their pet and themselves from the assailant.
