A helicopter transporting officials from a Russian defense plant crashed and caught fire on a private residence today, resulting in the deaths of four individuals. Three survivors were rescued from the distressed Ka-226 aircraft and promptly taken to a hospital in Russia. Reports indicate that one of the survivors is in critical condition. The helicopter was carrying high-ranking personnel from Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant, which has faced sanctions due to its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine. The plant specializes in manufacturing ground control systems and diagnostic equipment for Sukhoi and MiG attack aircraft.
The cause of the crash, labeled as a “catastrophe” by the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, is currently unknown. The incident occurred in the village of Achi-Su in the southern region of Dagestan. Witnesses reported that the helicopter was engulfed in flames as it circled in the air, possibly searching for a suitable spot for an emergency landing before crashing uncontrollably onto a residential property.
Fortunately, there were no casualties among the residents on the ground near the Zhemchuzhina recreation center where the helicopter went down in flames. Initial reports mistakenly identified the helicopter as a tourist aircraft, but it was later clarified that it was carrying staff from the defense plant. Israfil Israfilov, the head of the Dagestan Regional Control Center, confirmed that there were fatalities and injuries and that the circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation.
The Ka-226 helicopter is commonly used by the Russian military, national guard, and defense sector entities. The ill-fated journey was from Kizlyar to Izberbash on the Caspian Sea. Rescue teams are working to clear the wreckage promptly to determine the cause of the tragic event. Authorities are considering a “technical malfunction” as the probable reason for the crash based on early assessments.
Security camera footage captured the harrowing moment of the helicopter crashing and bursting into flames. A bystander was observed fleeing from the scene, presumably seeking assistance. According to a witness, the helicopter grazed a pier with its tail wing during an attempted landing, briefly ascended, and then plummeted near a beachside residence, causing a loud impact and subsequent explosion.
