Families who have lost loved ones during the pandemic are criticizing the Conservative government’s response to the crisis following a scathing report from a Covid inquiry.
Deborah Doyle, a member of Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK, delivered a passionate speech at the National Covid Memorial Wall near Parliament. She spoke out after an inquiry revealed internal chaos within the government and a lack of seriousness in addressing Covid-19, resulting in 23,000 deaths during the initial wave.
The report pointed fingers at former Prime Minister Boris Johnson for fostering a “toxic” environment at Number 10, frequently changing course. Additionally, key officials such as Health Secretary Matt Hancock and prominent scientists were accused of failing to act urgently in combating the virus.
Deborah, who lost her mother to the pandemic, emphasized, “The inquiry clearly blames Boris Johnson for the disastrous mishandling of the pandemic. The government’s actions led to numerous unnecessary deaths.”
She continued, “Had Johnson heeded scientific advice and imposed a lockdown just a week earlier, around 23,000 lives could have been saved. Instead, he prioritized his political image over public safety, delaying and prolonging lockdowns, disregarding scientific counsel, and neglecting frontline impacts.”
Reflecting on the report’s findings, she urged immediate implementation of recommended safeguards to prevent future vulnerabilities and ensure public safety.
Mandy Phillips from Surrey, who lost her father to the virus, expressed satisfaction with the report’s validation of public concerns about the government’s handling of the crisis, particularly highlighting criticisms of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s conduct.
Larry Byrne from Windsor, who lost his father during the initial wave, expressed disbelief at the government’s slow response, describing their actions as “unbelievably bad” given their leadership role.
The inquiry featured accounts from bereaved families who have become advocates for others nationwide. Joanna Goodman, a co-founder of Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice, shared her struggles with grief and the emotional toll of questioning the preventability of her loved one’s death.
A member of Scottish Covid Bereaved shared a personal account of feeling neglected and disregarded by the government’s messaging, ultimately losing their mother to the virus.
The voices of these families underscore the urgent need for accountability and improvements in government responses to future crises.
