A father in Offaly, Ireland, described as a “monster” by his daughter, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping and threatening to harm his child. The man, aged 51, was found guilty of physically and sexually abusing his daughter from the age of five to 13. The abuse included multiple counts of rape and oral rape between 2012 and 2020.
The daughter, now 19 years old, testified in court about the horrifying experiences she endured, which drove her to contemplate suicide at a young age. She bravely shared details of the abuse, stating that she refused to let her father take everything from her. The abuse began after her parents’ separation when she visited her father on weekends.
During one incident, the father compared her to her mother before sexually assaulting her. The abuse involved physical violence, with the man slapping her repeatedly during the assaults. The daughter eventually gathered the courage to speak up after enduring severe mental anguish, revealing the abuse to a friend and later to her mother.
The man’s arrest did not occur until 2023. In her victim impact statement, the daughter expressed the lasting impact of the abuse on her life and mental well-being. She disclosed that she kept the abuse secret to protect her family, feeling threatened and scared by her father’s actions.
Despite the trauma inflicted by her father, the daughter emphasized her resilience and determination to maintain her kind and loving nature. She highlighted the struggle of trusting others after being betrayed by a parental figure. The court sentenced the man to 12 years in jail, with additional restrictions upon his release, including supervision by Ireland’s Probation Service and a prohibition from contacting his daughters or their mother.
