A Yorkshire family constructed their own residence before selling it to embark on a global journey, experiencing a lifestyle akin to royalty while reducing their living costs by half. Danielle Booth and her spouse, Mike Booth, 36, initially pondered the idea of traveling the world after a 2019 French road trip with their two children, Emmy Booth, now 14, and Eli Booth, now 10.
Inspired by their travel experiences, craftsman Mike undertook the task of building a four-bedroom detached house from the ground up in 2020, with plans to sell it to fund their worldwide adventures. Following the completion of the renovation project three years later, the couple diligently saved and sold their possessions on Vinted and to acquaintances in preparation for selling their property in April of this year.
Their journey commenced on October 28, flying into Bangkok, Thailand, with the intention of traveling for at least a year. Danielle disclosed that their current weekly budget, supported by the house sale proceeds and a modest income from Mike’s UK business, is approximately £500.
Former NHS worker Danielle asserted that their new lifestyle in Thailand allows them to live luxuriously, feeling more secure than ever before. In Bradford, West Yorkshire, the family’s monthly expenses were roughly £4,500. By relocating and departing the UK, the 34-year-old mother believes they can halve their living costs and provide their children with a comprehensive cultural education.
The family’s decision to explore was also influenced by concerns about rising crime rates and dissatisfaction with the current education system. Danielle highlighted the safety and friendliness they have encountered in their travels, contrasting it with the challenges they perceived back home.
While on the road, Emmy will continue her studies through an online tutor, integrating cultural and fitness activities into their daily routine. Currently residing in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the family plans to visit Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Japan before settling in a new location after 12 months.
Despite some skepticism from acquaintances about their departure from the UK, Danielle emphasized the value of spending quality time with their children and the stress-free environment they have found abroad. The family expressed contentment with their current lifestyle, particularly enjoying the affordable fresh food and street vendors, though they miss the proximity to family back home.
