A tragic incident unfolded when a teenager became paralyzed and met a tragic end after ingesting a slug as part of a dare during a birthday celebration. The young rugby talent, Sam Ballard, hailing from Sydney, Australia, was socializing at a friend’s residence when he consumed the slug, unaware that it carried the lethal rat lungworm disease.
The parasite responsible for the infection typically resides in rodents, transferring its larvae to the animals’ excrement, which can then infect snails and slugs. Following the daring act in 2010, Sam initially did not exhibit any symptoms but later experienced severe leg pains. Concerned about the slug consumption, Sam sought reassurance from his mother, who dismissed any potential harm. However, he eventually developed a brain infection, slipping into a coma for an extensive 420 days upon which he awoke paralyzed from the neck down, encountering seizures, body temperature regulation issues, and necessitating tube feeding. Tragically, Sam succumbed to the illness at the age of 28 in 2018, with his family and devoted friends by his side.
Recounting the ill-fated gathering, Sam’s friend Jimmy recollected the moment when the dare transpired, describing how the group witnessed a slug and prompted Sam to ingest it without hesitation. Another friend, Michael Sheasby, vividly remembered the harrowing sight of Sam in the hospital post-party, observing his frail state amidst a tangle of medical equipment. Sam’s poignant final words to his mother, Katie, were “I love you.”
Despite the profound impact on her family, Katie harbored no resentment towards Sam’s friends, attributing their actions to camaraderie. She championed for Sam’s care during his final years, navigating challenges with the Australian government’s disability insurance scheme, which initially granted £234,000 but faced drastic reductions in 2017. Through unwavering advocacy from Sam’s loved ones, the decision was eventually reversed, ensuring adequate support for his ongoing care.
