Police and emergency medical services rushed to Scarborough Beach last evening following an incident where two teenagers were harmed by detonating fireworks. The individuals, both 18 years old, were reportedly handling the fireworks when the explosion occurred. One of them sustained hand injuries while the other suffered facial injuries, as confirmed by North Yorkshire Police. An Air Ambulance was dispatched to the Yorkshire location, and the youths were swiftly transported to James’ Cook University Hospital in Middlesborough for medical attention.
The fireworks display in question was allegedly unauthorized. A bystander mentioned, “Ambulance and police arrived promptly, but traffic congestion hindered their access. It would have been beneficial if the street had been closed to vehicles during this period.”
Social media images depicted young individuals gathered around a bonfire near the RNLI station on the beachfront. Additionally, a video surfaced showing a person walking with a lit firework in hand, cheered on by friends. The sparkler ignited, causing the individual to be engulfed in flames followed by a brief explosion.
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service issued a statement saying, “We received an emergency call at 7.13 pm last night (5 November) regarding an incident at Scarborough Beach. Multiple ambulance units were dispatched, including two ambulances and the air ambulance, and two patients were transported to the hospital.”
Another observer shared online, “Scarborough resembled a battleground last night. We had to relocate our dogs to the countryside to escape the chaos. Two teenagers were seriously injured at a beach bonfire. Authorities must take action to address these situations.”
The primary community Facebook page, Scarborough Moan, reported that children were “seriously injured.” The page admin, with over 75,000 followers, disabled comments to prevent the spread of unverified information regarding the incident.
North Yorkshire Police are now seeking potential witnesses to provide information. In a statement, the police department revealed, “Officers in Scarborough responded to a call around 7.15 pm on 5 November reporting a firework-related injury on Scarborough foreshore. Upon arrival, they discovered two teenagers, aged 18, with firework injuries—one to the face and the other to the hand. Investigations are ongoing, and individuals present at the scene are urged to contact the police if they have not already done so.”
